The Yamuna Expressway's Jewar toll plaza experienced heavy traffic on Sunday morning for the second consecutive day as families from Delhi-NCR traveled to their villages and hometowns to celebrate Diwali. With Diwali festivities beginning from Dhanteras on Saturday, large numbers of people have been taking the main roads connecting areas outside Delhi-NCR, resulting in significant traffic congestion.

Toll management had opened all lanes for two-wheelers and four-wheelers from Greater Noida to Agra early in the morning, anticipating the surge in vehicles. Despite these measures, long queues persisted both Saturday morning and evening.

Travelers from Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and other parts of the NCR began departing via the Yamuna Expressway from Saturday morning to celebrate Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. The continuous inflow of vehicles contributed to prolonged lines at the toll booths.

Officials explained that the congestion was partly caused by vehicles with low balances or blacklisted Fastags, preventing automatic toll deduction. To address this, the toll management opened three lanes for two-wheelers and all 11 lanes for four-wheelers, while deploying separate staff to collect cash and card payments from vehicles with invalid Fastags.

Despite these measures, even a brief stop of 30 seconds by a vehicle caused queues to form behind it. Traffic congestion was most severe between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and again from 3 p.m. onwards, with travelers waiting five to ten minutes to pass through the toll.

Additionally, long queues were reported on the Delhi-Lucknow Highway near the toll plaza. The sudden increase in vehicles on a holiday and festival day resulted in traffic jams stretching several kilometers, creating major delays for commuters.
