A day after Zomato claimed to have received Rs 2,000 notes from 72 per cent of its customers, who opted for cash-on-delivery (COD), the company has reportedly said it was a joke. According to India Today, Zomato spokesperson said that the Twitter post about being paid with Rs 2,000 currency notes by several customers was "a joke". It was not factual, the company has admitted.

Zomato's Twitter post on Monday, May 22, read: "since friday, 72% of our cash on delivery orders were paid in ₹2000 notes". This apparent joke was made in response to the Reserve Bank of India's decision to withdraw notes of Rs 2,000 denomination from circulation.

While Zomato's spokesperson has termed it a joke, the post about Rs 2,000 can still be seen on it Twitter handle. Further, there has been no public clarification on the Twitter post by the publicly traded company.

Soon after the RBI announced its move to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes on May 19, Zomato had tweeted a joke, which read:
"kids: exchange ₹2000 note at bank
adults: order cash on delivery and give ₹2000 note
legends: never had ₹2000 note"

On Friday, the RBI advised banks to stop issuing notes in the denomination of Rs 2,000. However, the Central bank clarified that these banknotes will continue to be legal tender.

According to the RBI, the move to withdraw notes of Rs 2,000 denomination has been introduced under the "Clean Note Policy" of the Reserve Bank of India.

The RBI has asked banks to provide deposit and/or exchange facilities for Rs 2,000 notes until September 30, 2023.

The notes of Rs 2,000 denomination were introduced in November 2016 primarily to meet the currency requirements of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes in circulation at that time.

The objective of introducing Rs 2,000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities. Therefore, the printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was stopped subsequently in 2018–19, stated the RBI.
