Zubeen Garg Death News: Contrary to earlier reports of a scuba diving accident, popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died during a yacht trip in Singapore with a few members of the local Assamese community, PTI quoted Chief Organiser of the North East India Festival (NEIF), Shyamkanu Mahanta, as saying.
“Assam's popular singer Zubeen Garg had gone on a yacht trip in Singapore with members of the local Assamese community when an accident occurred, which claimed his life, Chief Organiser of the North East India Festival (NEIF),” Mahanta said.
Soon after the accident, Garg was rushed to the Singapore General Hospital, where he passed away around 2:30 PM on Friday.

Zubeen Garg Death: What We Know So Far
- Garg died in a tragic accident during a yacht trip in Singapore, initially reported as a scuba diving mishap.
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore, Shilpak Ambule, informed him that Garg died while swimming without a life jacket despite lifeguards’ insistence.
- He was later found floating and given CPR before being rushed to the Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead around 2:30 PM on Friday.
- Sarma further said that Garg went on a yacht trip with 18 members, including members of the local Assamese community and his own team.
- Singapore authorities are questioning those present, and the North East India Festival events where Garg was scheduled to perform have been cancelled.
- The event organisers expressed grief and are closely working with the Indian High Commission in Singapore to complete the necessary procedures.
- Assam CM added that an autopsy will be conducted, and efforts are being made to bring Garg’s mortal remains to Assam.
Garg’s Singapore Event Organisers Issue Statement
In an official statement, Shyamkanu Mahanta & Team, the event organisers and managers of Garg’s Singapore visit said, “With profound grief, we share the heartbreaking news that our beloved icon, Zubeen Garg, passed away today at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 PM.”

According to the official statement, the event team had been attending a business meeting with senior Singaporean industrialists and policymakers at the Shangri-La Hotel to facilitate investments in Northeast India, when they came to know that Zubeen had met with an accident and had been rushed to the hospital.
Upon receiving the news from Zubeen’s manager, the team rushed to the hospital and has been working closely with the High Commission of India in Singapore to manage formalities related to Garg’s death. The organisers also stated that they had no prior knowledge that a few members of the local Assamese community had taken Zubeen on a yacht visit.
“On receiving the news, our team rushed immediately to the hospital and has since been working closely with the High Commission to complete the necessary procedures. This is a monumental loss, and words cannot express the depth of our grief,” the statement read.
Zubeen was slated to perform and interact with members of the Assamese diaspora and local dignitaries tomorrow at the North India Festival. His untimely demise has left the fans and admirers in shock across the world.

North East Festival Events Cancelled After Zubeen’s Death
Following the tragic death of the Popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, all events related to the North East Festival scheduled for Saturday in Singapore have been cancelled. Garg, 52, died in a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore.
He was immediately rushed to the Singapore General Hospital, where he passed away at around 2:30 PM on Friday. He had arrived in Singapore just two days ago to participate in the three-day North India Festival, a high-profile event scheduled to begin on Friday to celebrate the 60th year of India-Singapore diplomatic relations and the India-ASEAN Year of Tourism.
“Due to the tragic death of the heartthrob, the events have been cancelled. We regret to inform you that the upcoming B2B Trade & Tourism Meet, scheduled for Saturday at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, has also been cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances,” news agency PTI quoted Indian High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule as saying.
In addition to this, speeches and celebratory events at the pre-event dinner on Friday were also cancelled.
