A courtroom clash in Jharkhand has sparked legal and public attention after an advocate's sharp remarks to a High Court judge. A lawyer has been served a contempt notice by the Jharkhand High Court after a heated exchange during a court hearing, where he told a judge, “Don’t cross the limit."
The comment, made openly in court, prompted the judiciary to initiate suo motu contempt action against the lawyer.
The confrontation took place on Thursday during a hearing listed in the supplementary cause list. Tewari was wrapping up his arguments in a case concerning the reconnection of electricity supply to his client, whose service had been cut off due to non-payment of dues.
According to The Indian Express, the dispute began after the judge made an “ordinary" remark about Tewari’s style of argument, which did not sit well with the advocate, who reacted strongly.

In a clip from the court’s live-stream, which later spread widely online before being taken down, the judge is seen questioning, “Is this the way an advocate should argue?" Tewari retorted, “I will argue in my own way… Don’t try to humiliate anyone… Don’t cross the limit." The exchange didn’t stop there. Tewari added, “The country is burning. The country is burning with the judiciary."
The exchange quickly escalated until senior lawyers, including Jharkhand State Bar Council Chairman Rajendra Krishna, stepped in to calm the situation. The live stream was taken down shortly after.
