In a significant medical-technological breakthrough, BIT Mesra, in collaboration with RIMS Ranchi, has successfully developed an advanced Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) based system. This system uses transcranial ultrasound images to detect Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) in newborns across Jharkhand.
Project Funding And Support
This initiative was executed under the project titled "Explainable AI for Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Detection Using Ultrasound Images in Jharkhand Neonates: A Deep Learning Approach," funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). A research grant of Rs 40,58,495 was sanctioned for this project.
How The Technology Works
The developed system analyses cranial ultrasound images using state-of-the-art computer vision, deep learning and XAI techniques. It determines whether a newborn is exhibiting normal brain development patterns or if changes related to HIE are present.
The system features a user-friendly interface that simplifies the interpretation of complex ultrasound images for doctors. This not only boosts their diagnostic confidence but also minimises "inter-observer variability" (differences in interpretation between different doctors).

Why Is This Technology Special?
Simplification: It simplifies the reading of complex ultrasound scans for doctors.
Methodology: The system uses Transcranial Ultrasound (TCU) images to analyse brain development patterns in neonates.
Accuracy: It precisely determines if the brain is normal or affected by HIE.
Foundation: The technology is built on advanced Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and XAI.
The Research Team
BIT Mesra: Dr K Sridhar Patnaik (Principal Investigator) and Dr Itu Snigdh (Co-Principal Investigator).
RIMS Ranchi: Dr Rajiv Mishra (HOD, Neonatology & Pediatrics) and Dr Rajiv Kumar Ranjan (Associate Professor, Radiology).
Others: Dr M Rajesh Kumar Rao (ICMR-NIMR), along with Project Research Scientists Saket Kumar Singh and Kundan Kumar.
According to the team, this initiative marks a significant step forward in AI-enabled neonatal healthcare in India and holds great potential for widespread clinical application and large-scale deployment in the future.
