The Jharkhand High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of five local newspaper reports highlighting issues ranging from smuggling inside jails to civic lapses in Ranchi, and has sought responses from the concerned departments.
A division bench of Chief Justice Tarok Singh Chauhan and Justice Rajesh Shankar has made the state government a respondent in all matters and fixed September 8 as the next date of hearing.
One report exposed alleged extortion inside jails, claiming fixed rates were being charged for smuggling alcohol, cannabis, cigarettes, and other items to inmates. The court has sought a reply from the IG (Prisons), the Jail Superintendent, and the state government, asking what action has been taken.

Another report flagged garbage being dumped on roadsides, causing foul smells and hardships for residents. The bench has sought an explanation from the Municipal Corporation and the government.
Taking note of cattle roaming freely on city roads and consuming plastic from waste heaps, the court has again asked the Municipal Corporation and the government to explain what preventive measures are in place.
On a separate report regarding stray dogs inside Ranchi Airport premises, the court expressed security concerns and sought responses from the Central Government and the Municipal Corporation.
Finally, the bench pulled up the Transport Department over reports that high-security number plates are not being issued for vehicles older than six years, causing difficulties
