Jharkhand will implement the central government's recent advisory against the use of cough syrup for children under two years of age. Dr Siddharth Sanyal, the Director General of Health Services for the state, has directed all civil surgeons, as well as the superintendents and principals of medical colleges, to ensure strict compliance with this new guideline.
A formal letter from the Union Ministry of Health, dated October 3, has been circulated to all relevant authorities. The directive aims to promote rational drug distribution and enhance patient safety among the pediatric population.
Key Recommendations From The Advisory
The advisory, issued by the Directorate General of Health Services of the Union Ministry of Health, highlights that most acute coughs in children are self-limiting and often resolve without medical intervention. The specific guidelines are as follows:
Children Under 2: Cough syrup should not be given to children up to two years of age.
Children Under 5: The use of cough syrup is generally not recommended for children under the age of five.
Special Cases: In special circumstances, cough syrup may be prescribed for a child after a careful evaluation by a doctor. This must be done with an appropriate dosage, under close monitoring, and with strict adherence to instructions.
Focus On Public Awareness And Rational Drug Use
The health department also emphasised the need for a broader public awareness campaign. Key messages include:
Prescription Adherence: The public should be encouraged to use medicines prescribed by a doctor only for the minimum effective duration and to avoid consuming multiple medications simultaneously.
Non-Medicinal Measures: The importance of non-medicinal care, such as ensuring adequate water intake and rest for the child, should be promoted.
Private Sector Sensitisation: Doctors and distributors in the private sector must also be sensitised to these standards of care.
To ensure widespread implementation, all civil surgeons have been instructed to issue the necessary directives to all government and non-government healthcare institutions, dispensaries and medical centres within their respective jurisdictions.
