Happy Mahalaya! Today, September 21, 2025 is Mahalaya, celebrating the start of Durga Puja and the first day of Devi Paksha. This day holds much importance and is celebrated with great excitement and enthusiasm all over India but especially in Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, Bihar, etc. Today, many devotees wake up early to listen to the iconic Mahishasura Mardini radio program (still played on a number of stations) which is a staple program marking the start of Durga Puja. Many people also engage in the ritual of tarpan, giving offerings to their ancestors. As the day goes on, the significance of the day goes to seeking blessings from Goddess Durga to reinforce that good triumphs over evil and welcoming the Divine feminine into our families and lives.
