Age-Defying Skincare Tips: Our skin tends to lose its glow and elasticity with age. As we age, the skin becomes thinner, loses fat, and loses its plumpness and smoothness. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that over time, the skin begins to wrinkle. Factors in the environment such as ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, can make the skin less elastic. Gravity can cause the skin to sag and wrinkle. Certain habits, like smoking, also can wrinkle the skin.

Years of exposure to the sun leads to sun tanning, wrinkles, dryness, age spots and many other skincare woes. But there are things you can do to protect your skin and to make it feel and look better. Here are some age-defying tips by Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, a Skincare expert, that can be your saviour to protect your skin and age like a fine wine.

1. Drinking Beverages With Straw

According to Dr Mittal, drinking from a straw can actually contribute to early wrinkles. The repetitive motion of pursing your lips can lead to fine lines around the mouth over time. Various studies also state that drinking beverages through a straw could prematurely age the skin around the mouth.

2. Moisturisers

Dr Mittal says that when it comes to skincare, it's not just about your face. Your hands and neck are often overlooked but show the initial signs of ageing. Incorporate antioxidant-rich moisturisers and broad-spectrum SPF to keep these areas youthful and protected from environmental damage.

3. Avoid Tight Hairstyles

While tight ponytails might look sleek, they can lead to premature pattern baldness. The constant tension on the hair follicles can weaken them over time. Opt for looser hairstyles to minimise stress on your scalp and promote healthier hair growth, suggests Dr Mittal.

4. Sunscreen

Sunscreen plays a significant role in any skincare routine. Avoiding sunscreen from your skincare regimen can potentially damage your skin through harmful ultraviolet rays. The sun’s rays make our skin age more quickly. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), to protect your skin, apply sunscreen to all skin that clothing will not cover. You want to use a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and water resistance.

5. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep deprivation is known as one of the major triggers of skin problems. Lack of sleep can cause stress, which can lead to increased levels of cortisol in the body. The spike in cortisol levels can lead to inflammation and increased production of sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
