Mumbai AQI Toda: Amid the worsening air quality in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed strict restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan, or GRAP 4, in several key regions. The authority has instructed to halt the construction works in the regions where the air quality has crossed 'very poor' and 'severe' thresholds. The BMC has issued notices to over 50 construction sites to halt the works, further warning them of strict action in case of violation. The Bombay High Court had also directed the government to take necessary action after the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at more than 300 in several regions.
Restriction On Construction Works
The BMC has imposed strict action in several regions, including Mazgaon, Deonar, Malad, Borivali East, Chakala-Andheri East, Navy Nagar, Powai, and Mulund. The authority, in an attempt to control the situation, has issued stop-work/shutdown notices to more than 50 construction sites in these regions. Apart from this, small industries have also been asked to shift to cleaner processes. The civic authorities have also deployed flying squads in these regions to ensure the full implementation.
The air quality of the financial capital has severely worsened in the past few weeks, leading to an outrage from the residents. While reacting to the situation, several prominent personalities, including comedian Vir Das and filmmaker Soni Razdan, urged the authorities to necessary action. "Let us not be guilty of allowing apathy to kill us. Because that's what will happen," Razdan stated.
Earlier last week, the BMC stated that vehicular emission is one of the biggest reasons behind the worsened air quality in Mumbai. While providing details, it further stated that vehicular emissions are creating haze in the sky, affecting air quality. It also stated that the gases are not able to flow freely due to changing weather conditions and slow winds.
