It also helps to soothe the scalp and even promote silky, fuller hair. You can make Bhringraj oil by mixing some coconut oil with a few tablespoons of bhringraj powder or fresh herb and massaging it before shampooing. Also, herbal rinses like brewing bhringraj leaves with tea and cooling and rinsing the hair after shampooing. It is best to oil once a week and rinse a couple of times a week.

Henna

This red-brown plant has been used for centuries as a natural hair dye for hair and mehndi for skin. It helps strengthen the hair, seals the cuticles and covers greys without harsh chemicals. Using henna in combination with other herbs gives a rich natural colour and delayed greying. You can make a DIY henna mix with henna powder and amla or coffee for darker tones. You can also add yoghurt or lemon juice for consistency. Let it sit for 2-3 hours before rinsing with mild shampoo. Do this every month (or 6 weeks) to cover roots and refresh colour.

Curry Leaves

This is one of the Indian kitchen staples that is loved for its fragrance and often used in dals and stir-fries. They are rich in antioxidants and vitamin B that protect hair follicles and promote pigment retention, thus lowering the greying process over time. Boil a handful of curry leaves in coconut or olive oil, cool it, strain and apply to the scalp. Keep it on for an hour before rinsing. You can also grind fresh curry leaves with coconut oil and massage them regularly. Use this 2–3 times a week to make your scalp feel healthier.

Black Tea

Black tea, along with sage and rosemary, supports pigmentation of the hair and gives shine. Black tea coats the hair, adding depth and gloss. Rosemary and sage are loaded with phenolic compounds that stimulate pigmentation and regulate scalp health. Brew strong black tea with sage and rosemary leaves. Once it cools, use it as a final rinse after shampooing. You can do this weekly and expect darker roots and more vibrant shade, giving a natural tone to the hair.

Amla

Lastly, amla is probably the ultimate Indian haircare Ayurvedic herb. This bright green sour fruit is loaded with vitamin C, antioxidants and also has hair-preserving properties. Although it is unlikely to reverse the existing grey hair, but definitely slows down premature greying. Amla boosts melanin production in hair follicles while improving circulation to the scalp, thus providing stronger hair with shine and volume and slower greying. Make amla oil by mixing coconut or sesame oil with dried or powdered amla. Massage the scalp and leave it for a couple of hours or overnight and rinse off with mild shampoo. You can also apply amla hair packs by mixing amla powder with Bhringraj or fenugreek powder and a little yoghurt. Wait for 30 minutes before rinsing. Use once or twice a week for noticeable results over time.
