Unhealthy Habits That Affect Eyesight: Our eyes are one of the sensitive organs of our body that need special care and attention. They are an important part of our health as they help us see the world. Protecting this vital sense organ is important because it helps in reducing the risks of blindness, cataracts, glaucoma and vision loss. Some unhealthy habits that we practise regularly unintentionally can have detrimental effects on our eye health and increase the risks of eye health problems. Here is a list of some unhealthy habits that one must avoid to prevent eye disease and vision loss.

Unhealthy Habits That Effect Eyesight
1. Frequent Rubbing
Rubbing your eyes frequently can mean that you might have an eye infection, allergy or any other eye-related problems. When some dust particles enter our eyes, we get the urge to rub our eyes. This habit can affect our eye health in the long run. With time, this habit can damage the cornea, by making it thinner and making irritation worse.

We have stepped into a generation where we can’t complete even a single task without using our mobile phones. Staring at your phones for prolonged periods of time can lead to tired, dry, itchy eyes and blurred vision.
3. Watching TV At Night
It is a common habit to switch on the television and binge-watch our favourite shows. But little do we know that this habit can affect our eye health in many ways. Watching television at night in a completely dark room can put a strain on our eyes due to fluctuations in light and cause blurry vision.
4. Not Eating A Balanced Diet
It is extremely important to eat foods rich in essential nutrients that can aid eye health. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), adding powerful vitamins, antioxidants and minerals to your diet can improve your vision and overall eye health. Researchers have linked eye-friendly nutrients, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, to reducing the risk of certain serious eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

5. Not Getting Enough Sleep
Sleep deprivation is one of the common contributing factors to weak eyesight and other eye-related problems. A good night and uninterrupted sleep is essential for giving our eyes the much-needed rest to get the moisture and lubrication they require. Studies suggest that a minimum of five hours of uninterrupted sleep is required for the eyes to relax and renew themselves.
