Foods To Increase Platelet Counts In Dengue: Also known as the bone-breaking fever, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), about half of the world's population is now at risk of dengue with an estimated 100 to 400 million infections occurring each year. Dengue is a vector-borne disease that is preventable but in some cases can be severe.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Shrey Srivastav - Assistant Professor of Internal medicine, Sharda Hospital, Greater Noida explained the connction between dengue and platelets and said that increasing platelet count during dengue fever is crucial to prevent severe bleeding. While there is no specific food that can directly boost platelet production, a balanced diet can support your immune system and overall health, which is essential during dengue recovery. Dr Srivastava listed some healthy foods that one should include in their diet to increase platelet counts.
Papaya Leaf Extract: Some studies suggest that papaya leaf extract may help increase platelet count. It's often consumed as a juice but consult with a healthcare professional for guidance on dosage.
Fresh Fruits: Incorporate a variety of fruits like oranges, kiwis, and strawberries, as they are rich in vitamin C, which aids in platelet production.
Dark Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens provide essential nutrients like folate and vitamin K, which can support platelet production.
Protein: Include lean proteins such as chicken, fish, and beans to help the body recover and maintain a stable platelet count.
Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial to prevent dehydration, which can worsen dengue symptoms.
Avoid Alcohol and Processed Foods: Alcohol and processed foods can hinder the body's ability to recover. It's best to avoid them during dengue fever.
Common Tests To Detect Dengue Fever
Common tests to detect dengue fever typically involve identifying the presence of the dengue virus or its antibodies in a patient's blood, as per Dr.Vigyan Mishra - Chief of Lab, Neuberg Diagnostics, Noida.
The two primary types of tests used for dengue fever diagnosis are molecular tests and serological tests. Molecular tests, like PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), detect the genetic material of the virus itself.
Serological tests identify antibodies produced by the patient in response to the virus. The most common serological tests for dengue include ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).
ELISA is more accurate but time-consuming, while RDTs provide quicker results. However, dengue antibodies can cross-react with antibodies from other flaviviruses, leading to potential false positives.
Dr Mishra concluded that a combination of these tests, along with clinical symptoms and medical history, is often used for an accurate diagnosis. Early detection is crucial for effective patient management and outbreak.
