Natural Remedies For Cough: The increasing air pollution and air quality index in Delhi and adjoining cities have increased the risk of several health problems including cough, cold, asthma and breathing issues among many others. The air quality index in Delhi continues to stand in the ‘Severe’ category. People are left coughing and struggling with breathing problems in the city.

According to the Respiratory Health Association, breathing in air pollutants can irritate your airways and may cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, asthma episodes and chest pain. Exposure to air pollution puts you at risk for lung cancer, heart attacks, stroke and in extreme cases, premature death. Here are some home remedies to get rid of cough due to air pollution.

Natural Remedies For Cough

1. Honey

Honey is an extremely efficient ingredient that helps in getting relief from cough and cold. One tablespoon of honey can be a great remedy to limit coughs and sore throat. A teaspoon or two of honey may cut mucus production and fight the bacteria present in the mouth.

2. Ginger

According to WebMD, certain purified compounds of ginger root can relax the muscles that tighten your airways. You can eat ginger raw, or you can mix ground ginger root with honey and stir into hot tea.

Menthol is a natural compound found in peppermint which is extremely useful in opening your airways, which promotes easy breathing. Clean passage and easy breathing limit coughing and sore throat. You can use menthol for cough by rubbing or massaging it on your neck and chest.

4. Saltwater Gargle

Saltwater gargle is another effective remedy for sore throat and cough. The WebMD states that the extra moisture from saltwater can thin mucus and help wash out things that irritate your throat, much like a saline rinse does for the nose. Mix some salt in warm water and use it to gargle.

5. Peppermint

Peppermint has incredible healing properties and can help in relieving the symptoms of cold and cough. The presence of menthol in peppermint works to relieve cough. You can use peppermint oil, which is known to help in relaxing the muscles of your windpipe, further relieving cough.
