Aamras In Summer: As the summer sun blazes high, the heat feels relentless. The heatwaves intensify with the days passing by in India. Although most people hate the heat, humidity and high temperature, the only thing they love about summer is mangoes. Regarded as the king of fruits, mangoes can be eaten raw or made into several delicious delicacies like Aamras. Aamras is a popular and traditional mango recipe hailing from the Western Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Aamras is considered a summer staple in many households, bringing together the taste, tradition and a wide range of health benefits.
What Is Aamras?
In Hindi, the word ‘Aam’ means mango and ‘Ras’ means essence or extract or juice. So the word Aamras literally means a juicy mango extract. It is also known as Keri no Ras in Gujarati, where ‘Keri’ means mango. Traditionally, aamras is served with piping hot Pooris. The pairing known as aamras poori is liked by many and is quite popular. Aamras can be eaten any time of the day and can also be served as a dessert after a meal.
Apart from its mouth-watering flavour, aamras is known to be a powerhouse of goodness that makes it an essential addition to the summer diet. Here are five reasons why aamras is considered a summer staple.
Benefits Of Aamras In The Summer Season
Hydration
Aamras is made of mangoes, which have high water content, thus keeping the body hydrated in the summer months. The hydrating properties of aamras replenish the water lost through sweat. Besides, it quenches the thirst and also keeps the body cool.
Nutrient-Rich
Apart from being tasty, aamras is packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Mangoes are rich in vitamin C and A, which help boost immunity and eye health, respectively. Also, the presence of antioxidants helps fight the free radicals and protects the skin from sun damage in the hot summer months.
Boosts Energy
The intense heat in the summer season causes a dip in the energy level. Indulging in a bowl of chilled aamras can give a quick boost in energy. The natural sugars, namely fructose and glucose, in mangoes are easily digestible and provide instant energy. This is also the reason why aamras is served during fasts and festive feasts. The delicacy satisfies hunger as well as restores energy.

Aids Digestion
Often, people suffer from stomach issues like bloating and indigestion in the summer season. The presence of cardamom or dry ginger powder used to enhance the flavour of the aamras helps improve digestion. Also, mangoes contain a digestive enzyme called amylase that breaks down food and makes it easier for the stomach to process meals.
Benefits Skin
This easy-to-make aamras is rich in antioxidants and vitamins that help to improve skin health from within. Regular consumption in the summer season can give a healthy glow to the skin, fighting dryness caused by sun exposure and even help in detoxification.
