Common Weird Phobias: Almost every person has some kind of phobia that makes them experience feelings of fear and anxiety. A phobia is a persistent, unrealistic and excessive fear of an object, person, animal or situation. When an individual experiences his/her phobias, they either try to avoid the situation or endure it with anxiety. There are several types of phobias depending on the individuals.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, phobias can happen in early childhood. But they are often first seen between ages 15 and 20. They affect both men and women equally. However, men are more likely to seek treatment for phobias. Here is a list of some weird phobias that are more common than you think.

1. Pharmacophobia

Also known as ‘medication phobia’, pharmacophobia is a common fear of the use of pharmacological treatments. People with medication phobia may feel anxious or nervous upon seeing or hearing medications in different settings. The triggers of pharmacophobia depend on individuals and the most common cause of this phobia is negative medication experience.

2. Arachnophobia

An irrational fear of spiders and other arachnids such as scorpions and ticks is referred to as Arachnophobia. According to the Cleveland Clinic, fear of spiders becomes a phobia when it consumes your thoughts, interferes with your daily activities and keeps you from socialising with your family and friends. Symptoms of arachnophobia include sweating or shaking tightness in your chest or rapid heartbeat.

3. Ailurophobia

One of the most common phobias is fear of cats known as ailurophobia. People with this type of phobia feel anxious when they think about a cat, see cat images or even hear the voice of a cat. The common cause may be negative experiences with cats. In extreme cases of ailurophobia, people may avoid going out of their homes to avoid the chance of seeing cats.

4. Ornithophobia

Ornithophobia is the fear of birds which may be triggered due to a scary or negative experience with a bird. If you find yourself staying indoors and avoiding places with birds, it may be ornithophobia and a mental health specialist can help.

5. Nomophobia

Nomophobia is a common phobia that is referred to as a psychological condition when people have a fear of being detached from mobile phone connectivity. It is also known as ‘No Mobile Phone Phobia’ and comes along with symptoms including anxiety, respiratory alteration, trembling, perspiration, agitation, disorientation and tachycardia.
