Living with vitiligo can lead to significant anxiety and emotional distress because of its visible nature and the social stigma that often accompanies it. Coping with vitiligo-related anxiety requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both mental and physical well-being. By implementing certain effective strategies, you can better manage anxiety and lead a fulfilling life despite the challenges posed by vitiligo.

Prioritising mental health is crucial and helpful strategies provide a strong foundation for building resilience and self-acceptance for those affected by this condition. Dr Rahul Chandhok, Head Consultant, Mental Health and Behavioural Science at Artemis Hospital Gurugram listed seven mental health strategies to help cope with vitiligo-related anxiety.

Tips To Manage Vitiligo-Related Anxiety

1. Educate Yourself and Others

Knowledge is very empowering. Learning about vitiligo, its causes, and treatments can reduce the uncertainty and fear surrounding the condition. Sharing this information with friends and family can help them in understanding this condition and support you better, reducing feelings of isolation.

2. Seek Professional Support

Talking to a mental health professional, such as a therapist or counsellor, can provide a safe space to express your feelings and develop coping strategies. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is especially effective in addressing anxiety and changing negative thought patterns associated with vitiligo.

3. Join Support Groups

Connecting with others who have vitiligo can provide a sense of community and understanding. Support groups, whether in-person or online, offer a platform to share experiences, advice, and encouragement. Making the affected person realise that they are not alone in their journey can significantly alleviate anxiety.

4. Practice Mindfulness And Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness and relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation, can help in managing anxiety. These practices promote a sense of calm and can be especially useful during times of stress or when facing triggering situations.

5. Focus On Positive Self-Talk

Challenge negative thoughts and replace them with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths, accomplishments, and the qualities that make you unique beyond your skin condition. Building a habit of positive self-talk can improve self-esteem and reduce anxiety.

6. Develop Skincare Routine

Taking care of your skin can be a form of self-care that boosts your confidence. Use sunscreens to protect against sunburn, moisturise regularly, and consult a dermatologist for any treatments that may help even out skin tone. Feeling proactive about managing your condition can reduce feelings of helplessness.

7. Engage In Physical Activity

Regular physical activity has a lot of mental health benefits, including reducing anxiety and improving mood. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or joining a sports team, indulge in an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your routine.
