Being mindful of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations in the present moment can have a profoundly positive impact on your mental health. This technique reduces stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms by encouraging people to accept and appreciate their experiences without judgment. Being present helps person better control how they respond to difficult circumstances, thereby enhancing resilience and coping skills.
Regular mindfulness training, such as meditation or deep breathing, can also improve memory, focus, and overall cognitive performance. Integrating mindfulness into daily life fosters a sense of equilibrium and serenity, leading to improved mental health overall. In a conversation with Jagran English, Kamna Chhibber, a clinical psychologist and Head of the Mental Health Department at Fortis Healthcare, discussed why mindfulness is an important tool for building better mental and physical health.

According to psychologist Kamna, mindfulness is crucial as it allows individuals to be fully present in every moment and experience life more fully. Many people tend to be distracted or engaged in multiple thoughts or activities simultaneously. While multitasking is often valued, it detracts from being fully present in the present moment.
Practicing mindfulness should be a daily endeavor that enables individuals to fully immerse themselves in their activities and experiences. Even something as simple as having a cup of tea should be experienced fully, without distractions. This involves engaging all the senses—the smell, appearance, temperature, and taste.

Finally, psychologist Kamna emphasized that integrating mindfulness into one's life can induce relaxation and calmness. It helps individuals manage the stress of daily life and positively influences their thinking and responses to situations. Effective stress management also benefits physical health, allowing individuals to pace themselves throughout the day in a manner that promotes positive experiences for both body and mind.
