What Is Malai and Why is it Used in Skincare?

Malai is just clotted cream that is white or yellowish in colour. It is prepared by boiling pure and non-homogenised milk at 180 degrees Celsius. After the cream has cooled, a coagulated layer of proteins and fat forms on top of the boiling process, which is gently skimmed off from the above, forming malai.

Malai provides radiant skin that is also silky and supple. All you need to do is combine a tablespoon of gram flour and malai and apply for 20 minutes to achieve a lovely golden glow. You can apply this once or twice a week and eventually you’ll get a smooth, supple skin with a dewy glow.

Malai is also used as a natural cleanser as it unblocks pores and instantly removes dust from the skin’s surface, preventing acne and other radicals. Thus, it functions as an exfoliant, tan remover and skin moisturiser.

Both aloe vera and malai are known to benefit the skin, however, they differ in texture, application, and other factors. Aloe vera is more commonly used to treat skin and hair as it quickly blends into the skin. Its slimy gel texture allows for quick absorption, thus, they show faster results. On the other hand, malai is extracted organically and provides the skin with many nutrients. However, owing to its heavy texture, it may leave a layer of fat on the skin, attracting dust due to the high-fat content and so it is not recommended for oily and acne-prone skin. When it comes to providing a glowing skin, malai holds an upper hand as it deeply nourishes the skin, leaving it soft, plump and visibly glowing.
