Childhood diabetes is becoming a growing concern in India. Once primarily associated with adults, type 2 diabetes is now increasingly affecting children and adolescents. The rising prevalence of this condition is driven by a combination of factors with obesity emerging as a significant contributor. In recent years, lifestyle changes, dietary habits and reduced physical activity have contributed to the growing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in children. With childhood obesity becoming more common, these young individuals are at greater risk of developing diabetes early in life, creating long-term health challenges.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Jasjeet Singh Wasir, Director, Endocrinology & Diabetology, Medanta, Gurugram explained the role of obesity in childhood diabetes.

Talking about it, she said that obesity is a driving force behind childhood diabetes and the several factors which contribute to it are as follows-

Obesity has become one of the primary reasons for the surge in childhood diabetes in India. The connection between obesity and type 2 diabetes is well-established with excess body fat leading to insulin resistance, a key factor in the development of the disease. Children who are overweight or obese, especially those with a family history of diabetes are more likely to have elevated insulin resistance, putting them at greater risk for diabetes.

Sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary choices have contributed to a growing epidemic of obesity in children. Traditional, balanced diets are increasingly being replaced by fast food, sugary beverages and processed snacks that are high in calories but low in nutritional value.

Changes in lifestyle and dietary habits are major contributors to the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes in children. Fast food, sugary drinks, and snacks are readily available and often preferred by children over healthier options like whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

In addition, children are spending more time in front of screens whether on smartphones, televisions or computers, resulting in reduced physical activity. This lack of exercise further exacerbates the risk of obesity, which in turn increases the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

Psychosocial stress also plays a significant role in the development of type 2 diabetes in children. Academic pressures, social expectations and the demands of modern life contribute to chronic stress in young people. Children who experience high levels of stress may be more prone to developing the condition.

Further, the doctor also said that preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes in children requires a proactive and comprehensive approach. Early screening is essential, particularly for children who have a family history of diabetes or who are already overweight. Public health initiatives that promote awareness about healthy lifestyle choices are crucial in reducing the risk of obesity and diabetes.
