UPSET stomach or dyspepsia, indigestion refers to feelings of discomfort in the upper abdomen. It can also be defined as a burning sensation or feeling of fullness after eating large quantities of food. The common symptoms associated with indigestion include pain, burning sensation or discomfort in the upper abdomen, bloating, burping, feeling uncomfortable after eating, nausea, gas, gurgling in the stomach etc.
According to the Mayo Clinic, mild indigestion is usually nothing to worry about but consult your doctor if discomfort persists for more than two weeks. When we suffer or experience indigestion, the immediate urge is to get relief from those uncomfortable symptoms. There are several home remedies and herbs that can help ease the symptoms of indigestion or upset stomach. Here’s a list of some effective Ayurvedic herbs that can be great to treat indigestion.
Ayurvedic Herbs That Can Help Prevent Indigestion
1. Amla
Amla, also known as gooseberry, contains antioxidants, such as vitamin C which is proven to reduce stomach acidity. It is also high in fibre and tannic acid, which can effectively reduce bloating and ease constipation. You can take one teaspoon of amla powder, mix it in warm water and consume it every morning on an empty stomach.
2. Triphala
Triphala is an ancient Ayurvedic herb known for its medicinal properties. According to WebMD, the antioxidants in it can help fight free radicals in the body, and reduce inflammation along with your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and others. Triphala is also used for indigestion as it is known to reduce constipation, mucous, abdominal pain, hyperacidity, and flatulence while improving the frequency, yield, and consistency of stool, as per the National Institutes of Health.
3. Aloe Vera
No one is unaware of the magical benefits of aloe vera when it comes to health. According to Healthline, decolourised and purified aloe vera juice may be a safe and effective treatment for reducing reflux symptoms. The Mayo Clinic recommends that aloe vera can be used to relieve constipation, but sparingly. They advise that a dose of 0.04 to 0.17 grams of dried juice is sufficient.
4. Isabgol (Flea Seeds)
Isabgol or flea seeds is known for their weight loss benefits. This natural herb helps in preventing overeating and promotes feelings of fullness. According to several studies, isabgol also helps in cleansing the colon, and indigestion and helps in easing constipation.
