Breast Cancer In Men: Amongst different types of cancer, breast cancer in men is a rare event, accounting for 1% of all breast cancers. Though rare, it is a significant health concern that requires awareness and understanding. In contrast to women, men possess a small amount of breast tissue where cancer can develop. However, like women, recognizing the risk factors and warning signs is crucial for early detection and treatment.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Anusheel Munshi, Director - Radiation Oncology, Fortis Hospital, Noida listed some warning signs and risk factors of breast cancer that one should note.

Risk Factors Of Breast Cancer In Men

Several factors can increase the risk of breast cancer in men. These include age more than 60 years and genetic mutations, such as inherited mutations in genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2. A family history of breast cancer can also indicate a higher risk, as can hormonal imbalances from conditions like Klinefelter syndrome, previous radiation exposure to the chest area, liver diseases like cirrhosis, and obesity, which can lead to increased hormonal levels such as oestrogen.

Some of the important risk factors can be significantly mitigated by regular exercise, avoiding junk food and maintaining a reasonably lean figure throughout life.

Detection Of Breast Cancer

As is in the case of women, early detection of breast cancer in men is vital for effective treatment. Key warning signs include a painless lump or swelling in the breast tissue or under the armpit, changes in the nipple such as retraction, redness, or scaling and any discharge from the nipple, particularly if it contains blood. Other warning signs include skin changes like dimpling, puckering, or redness over the breast. Although less common, pain or tenderness in the breast area can also be a symptom.

It is important to realise that men often overlook the possibility of breast cancer, thinking that it is a women-related disease only. This leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, regular self-examinations and awareness of one’s own family medical history are essential. If any of the warning signs are present, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider or a cancer specialist promptly. While breast cancer in men is uncommon, understanding the risk factors and recognizing the warning signs can lead to early detection and better outcomes.
