Chaitra Navratri 2024 Fasting Rules: The auspicious nine-day period of Chaitra Navratri has begun on April 9 and devotees are immersed in the celebrations of the holy festival. It is a vibrant festival that is celebrated with great fervour and devotion amongst the Hindu community. Navratri is celebrated to mark the triumph of Goddess Durga over demon Mahishasura and also the homecoming of Lord Rama by defeating Ravana in some parts of the country.

During these special nine days, devotees observe a whole day fast and worship different avatars of Goddess Durga. Devotees abstain from eating non-vegetarian foods such as meat, chicken etc and other foods during fasting and consume only certain foods during fasting. Here are the foods that you can eat and should avoid during Navratri fasting.

Foods To Eat

People can eat fruits during Navratri fasting.

Replace your regular salt with rock salt or sendha namak to prepare your food to open the fast.

Spices that you can consume during Navratri include cumin seeds, cumin powder, green cardamom, black pepper powder, cinnamon, ajwain, cloves, and black peppercorns.

Devotees can eat vegetables including potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, arbi, bottled gourd, cucumber, pumpkin, and spinach.

Milk and dairy products such as ghee, curd, paneer, cottage cheese, and khoya can be consumed during Navratri.

Foods To Avoid

Onion and garlic, both tamasic in nature, are said to be damaging to the body and psyche. During these nine days, one must maintain a sattvic diet.

Non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, poultry, and eggs are absolutely forbidden during Navratri.

Keep in mind to avoid all junk and fast foods.

Even people who are unable to observe the fast should avoid eating non-vegetarian meals. Alcohol and smoking should also be avoided throughout the celebration.

Devotees who are fasting should avoid eating beans, lentils, rice, flour, maize flour, whole wheat and semolina.

Make sure to avoid alcohol consumption during the nine auspicious days of Chaitra Navratri.
