Many holiday shoppers and those attending Christmas parties may feel overwhelmed because of their overwhelming workload from all the shopping, attending multiple family get-togethers, and the numerous social functions they must attend at this time of year. Many people are experiencing extreme stress and sleep disruptions during the Christmas season, as medical professionals have indicated, from holiday-season-related spikes in cortisol levels due to increased stress caused by the many pressures that the season brings and all its associated activities. Your body needs time to recover from all this festive stress and identifying the symptoms is key to ensuring you will have the time necessary to recuperate.

Holiday sleep deprivation can lead to exhaustion and may cause harm to the body. Medical professionals and doctors note that blue light emitted from holiday lights and screens disrupts your body's natural rhythm by reducing melatonin production. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Leelamohan PVR, Consultant Physician, Padithem Health Care, Bangalore, Consults at Practo, shares why sleep and stress levels need urgent attention.

Understanding Christmas Stress

Christmas stress is real. It often stems from trying to meet social expectations, gift planning, family responsibilities, and wrapping up year-end work deadlines. Dr Leelamohan PVR states, “When stress becomes chronic, it triggers the release of cortisol—the body’s stress hormone—leading to fatigue, irritability, headaches, and poor immunity.” Add irregular sleep patterns, heavy meals, and late-night screen exposure, and our natural circadian rhythm is easily disturbed. The result: tired mornings and low energy through the day, even in the middle of holiday cheer.

Prioritise Restful Sleep

To stay balanced, one must consciously prioritise rest. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep, even if it means stepping away early from a gathering. Dr Leelamohan PVR says, “Limit caffeine after evening hours and avoid heavy dinners close to bedtime.” Creating a soothing pre-sleep ritual—such as listening to soft carols, dimming the lights, or practising deep breathing—helps the body unwind and prepare for restful sleep.

Simple Ways To Manage Stress

Equally important is stress management. Simple mindfulness practices can make a big difference. A few minutes of meditation, light stretching, or gratitude journaling each morning can reset your mood for the day. Dr Leelamohan PVR mentions, “Maintaining hydration, eating lighter meals with fruits and vegetables, and spacing out indulgent treats can prevent bloating and sluggishness.” If the schedule feels overwhelming, learn to say “no” gracefully—true wellness means respecting your limits.
