Pregnancy cravings characterised by strong desires for specific foods are a common experience worldwide with notable cultural differences. Research shows that up to 90% of pregnant women report having cravings which typically fall into categories such as sweet, salty, spicy or sour foods. In some cases, pregnant ladies may have a condition known as pica. Pica is the craving and purposeful consumption of non-food substances like earth, raw starch ice et cetera. Studies suggest these cravings might indicate the body’s need for certain nutrients while hormonal changes during pregnancy can influence taste and smell.
Psychological factors such as stress may also contribute. If cravings lead to poor dietary choices, they can negatively affect maternal and neonatal well-being. Thus, understanding pregnancy cravings is essential for promoting maternal health and managing dietary habits effectively. In a conversation with Jagran English, Avni Kaul, Nutritionist, Dietician and Wellness Coach, Specialist of Pregnancy Health and Founder of Nutri Activania lists healthy alternatives to satisfy taste buds during pregnancy cravings.
Healthy Alternatives To Pregnancy Cravings
1. Healthy strategies can help manage cravings while ensuring proper nutrition. For instance, those craving sweets might opt for fruit-based alternatives such as fruit salads drizzled with honey or maple syrup, whole fruits, trail mix, peanut butter stuffed dates, fruit and nut shakes etcetera which satisfy sweet cravings while providing vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
2. Cravings for salty snacks can be addressed with nutritious options like air-popped popcorn lightly salted, roasted chickpeas with herbs, makhana bhel, vegetable chips, vegetable sticks with hummus dip, sprouted moong chaat etc. These choices not only curb cravings but also supply fibre and protein.
3. For individuals craving dairy, incorporating low-fat dairy products is a healthier approach. Greek yogurt or low-fat curd topped with nuts or fresh fruits is both delicious and rich in calcium and protein. Other options include low-fat cheese or fortified plant-based milk, low-fat curd vegetable raita and fruit and nut shakes with low-fat milk which provides essential nutrients without excessive saturated fats.
4. Unusual cravings such as those associated with pica require prompt consultation with a healthcare provider. These cravings may stem from nutrient deficiencies and addressing the underlying issue can help manage them.
5. Additionally, staying well-hydrated can sometimes diminish the intensity of cravings. What feels like a craving may, in fact, signal dehydration. Drinking adequate water throughout the day can reduce cravings and promote overall health.
