Tips To Address Skin Concerns: Skin care is often perceived as a women's domain but it's equally important for men. Men's skin is exposed to harsh environmental factors like pollution, UV rays and shaving which can lead to premature ageing, dryness and irritation. Moreover, men's skin is thicker and oilier, making it prone to blackheads and acne. Neglecting skin care can lead to long-term damage and affect overall health.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Kashish Kalra, Head of Dept and Consultant, Dermatology, Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital, Saket listed some simple yet effective tips to combat skin concerns in men.
Skin Care Tips For Men
When it comes to skincare, the basic routine remains the same for everyone i.e cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. However, men's skin is typically thicker and more sebaceous so the products used need to be chosen carefully. Cleansers should be effective and it’s beneficial to use one with some exfoliating agents but if you have very sensitive skin, excessive exfoliation should be avoided.
After cleansing, moisturising is important. In places like Delhi where the climate varies from summer to winter, your moisturiser may need to change with the seasons. In the summer, you might need a lighter moisturiser while in the winter, a thicker one may be necessary to prevent dryness. It's important to adjust your moisturiser according to your skin's needs and the current weather. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for male skin.
Thirdly, sun protection is crucial. Men are generally less conscious about sunscreen but since they tend to spend more time outdoors, it’s especially important. Sunscreen should offer protection from both UVA and UVB rays, so look for filters with a high PA rating (PA+++ or more) and an SPF between 30 and 50. A key point about sunscreen is reapplication. Most people apply sunscreen once and then forget about it but it needs to be reapplied every two hours if you're spending time outdoors.
For additional skin care, you can consider adding a serum like vitamin C for brightening or glycolic acid or kojic acid for pigmentation. For those over 30, incorporating a retinol serum once or twice a week can help address signs of aging. However, retinol can make your skin more sensitive, so it should be used gradually.
Lastly, shaving can be a problem for men, leading to razor bumps and skin irritation. After shaving, it’s essential to apply an aftershave and you may also use a mild antibiotic cream such as mupirocin or fusidic acid to prevent infection and soothe the skin.
