Best And Worst Foods For Thyroid: Thyroid is a common ailment across the world, which is defined as a condition when your thyroid makes either too much or too little of these important hormones, it’s called a thyroid disease. From hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, there are different types of thyroids.
According to the National Institutes Of Health (NIH), the age-adjusted incidence rates of thyroid cancer per 100,000 are about 1 for males and 1.8 for females as per the Mumbai Cancer Registry, which covered a population of 9.81 million subjects.
What Is Hypothyroidism?
According to Mayo Clinic, hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid gland doesn't make enough thyroid hormone. This condition also is called underactive thyroid. Hypothyroidism may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Over time, hypothyroidism that isn't treated can lead to other health problems, such as high cholesterol and heart problems.

Diet For Hypothyroidism
Mugdha Pradhan, Functional Nutritionist and founder of Ithrive: Healing and Beyond, in a conversation with the editorial Only My Health, explained how diet plays a quintessential role in the prevention of Hypothyroidism. She explained that an improper gut can also be a major factor contributing to hypothyroidism. Apart from blood tests and medical attention, the thyroid can be revered and prevented by including healthy foods in your diet.
Best Foods To Eat For Thyroid
According to Pradhan, in order to keep your thyroid optimum, you should consume good quality animal protein such as eggs, mutton, prawns, and fish can be included in your thyroid diet. Consume foods rich in iodine seaweed (nori, kelp, kombu, wakame), fish, shellfish (cod, canned tuna, oysters, shrimp), table salts labelled as iodized, dairy (milk, cheese, yoghurt), eggs, beef liver and chicken.
Include rice-based chapatis and avoid wheat. Consume rice in smaller quantities to maintain thyroid health. However, if you also have type-2 diabetes, reduce your regular rice intake and include healthy fruits in your diet. Incorporate goitrogenic foods such as cabbage and consume them once or twice a week if you have thyroid, but make sure they are properly cooked.
Foods To Avoid For Thyroid
It is important to note that one should avoid foods that can cause inflammation in the gut to prevent the thyroid and worsening of the thyroid. These foods include white sugar, processed foods such as namkeen, and biscuits should be avoided. You should also avoid grains containing gluten such as wheat as gluten can sometimes cause autoimmune thyroid.
Avoid using seed oils such as sunflower oil, mustard oil, sesame oil or groundnut oil and replace them with butter, ghee or coconut oil in your thyroid diet. If you experience health problems from dairy products, avoid consuming them as well. Ideally identifying the root cause of your thyroid problems can be an essential step towards its prevention.
