Heatwaves can worsen arthritic symptoms due to high temperatures and humidity. People with arthritis may experience increased joint pain and inflammation as a result of these conditions. The heat can lead to dehydration, which may exacerbate joint pain and stiffness. Furthermore, the cardiovascular system's strain during a heatwave can reduce the effectiveness of blood flow to the joints, increasing discomfort and swelling.
To manage their arthritis symptoms during heatwaves, people with the disease must stay cool, stay hydrated, and limit their outdoor activities. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Ashwani Maichand, Director of the Department of Orthopaedics at the CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, discussed how heatwaves trigger arthritis.
According to Dr. Ashwani, heatwaves, marked by extended periods of extreme heat, can significantly affect individuals with arthritis. Symptoms such as increased pain, stiffness, and discomfort often intensify during hot weather. Understanding the triggers behind heatwave-related arthritis symptoms can aid in better managing the condition during these challenging periods.
Dehydration And Synovial Fluid: Heatwaves can worsen arthritis symptoms through dehydration. When the body loses more fluid than it consumes, it leads to reduced production of synovial fluid, which lubricates and cushions the joints. This reduction in synovial fluid decreases its volume and effectiveness, resulting in increased joint friction and heightened pain and stiffness.

Increased Inflammation: High temperatures can also amplify inflammation in arthritic joints. Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow to the skin in an effort to cool the body. This increased blood flow can worsen inflammation in already inflamed joints, causing swelling, redness, and intensified pain.
Muscle Tension And Joint Stress: In response to discomfort during a heatwave, individuals may unconsciously tense their muscles, leading to muscle tension and added stress on the joints. This tension can worsen arthritis symptoms, making movement more painful and difficult. Additionally, the increased joint stress can accelerate wear and tear, potentially causing long-term damage and worsening arthritis symptoms over time.
Impact On Sleep Quality: Heatwaves can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to poor sleep quality and fatigue. Adequate rest is crucial for managing arthritis symptoms, as it helps repair and regenerate tissues damaged by inflammation. Poor sleep can increase pain sensitivity and fatigue, making it harder to cope with arthritis symptoms during a heatwave.

Managing Arthritis During Heatwaves:
- To reduce the impact of heatwaves on arthritis symptoms, individuals can take several proactive measures:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures by staying indoors or seeking shade.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing to help regulate body temperature.
- Use fans or air conditioning to keep indoor spaces cool and comfortable.
- Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to reduce muscle tension and stress.
At last Dr. Ashwani said, by understanding how heatwaves trigger arthritis symptoms through dehydration, increased inflammation, muscle tension, and poor sleep quality, individuals with arthritis can take proactive steps to manage their condition. Consulting with a healthcare provider can offer personalized advice and treatment options for managing arthritis symptoms during heatwaves.
