Parkinson's disease (PD) is a deteriorating brain disease that is primarily associated with movement and coordination. It develops when the neurons within the brain that produce dopamine (feel-good hormone) begin to degenerate. Parkinson's interferes with the nervous system which causes a steady loss of ability to control movement. Although its cause is unknown, a combination of genetic and environmental factors contributes to its formation. Although a majority of individuals correlate PD with tremors, the disease frequently presents various other symptoms such as sleep disturbances and even mental challenges.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Apurva Sharma, Consultant – Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram listed early warning signs of Parkinson's disease to watch out for.

How to recognise the early signs of Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson's does not occur overnight, it rather begins gradually but with harmful effects, which is why it is important to notice the early warning signs. These are some of the most important indicators:

Reduced Sense Of Smell- Difficulty smelling certain odours may be an early warning sign.

Contant Interference In Sleep- Sleeping through the night, but having vivid dreams that you act out (REM sleep behaviour disorder) which is associated with PD.

Chronic Constipation- Long-term constipation could mean nervous system changes are happening.

Mood Fluctuations- Depression and anxiety tend to develop before the physical symptoms do.

Less Expressive Facial Features- A diminished or blank range of facial expressions (hypomimia) is an early indicator.

Changes In Handwriting- If one notices drastic change in handwriting like becoming significantly small or more cramped, it may be an indication of early PD.

Changes In Voice Tone- One’s voice may gradually become softer and monotone.

Changes in Posture- A stooping or hunched posture is an early indicator.

Recurring Dizziness Or Fainting- Sudden dizziness upon standing may be associated with PD.

Slower Movements (Bradykinesia)- Normal daily activities become more laboured or harder to accomplish.

How to manage Parkinson's and slow its progression?

Even though there is no treatment, early diagnosis enables more effective management of symptoms. Some of the ways to assist-

Medications: Medications replenish lost dopamine and enhance control over movement.

Exercise and Physiotherapy: Performing activities like yoga, strength training, or supervised physical therapy can aid in maintaining mobility.

Diet and Hydration: Proper diet and hydration promote overall health.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS): In severe cases, this procedure can control the motor symptoms. It consists of implanting a minute device that delivers electrical impulses to targeted brain regions, governing erratic activity and alleviating symptoms such as tremors and stiffness.
