Aloe Vera has many health benefits such as reducing inflammation and stimulating skin growth and repair. It is also used for minor cuts and burns. Over the years, aloe vera gel has gained widespread popularity as it has the potential to regrow hair, and many commercial skin lotions and cosmetics are also using aloe vera gel as one of its ingredients in skin care products.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Asmita Dhekne Chebbi, MBBS, MD- Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore told the effectiveness of the aloe vera on regrowing hair and listed out the uses of aloe vera on the scalp.
Impact of aloe vera gel on the scalp
Aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory properties, it has a number of essential vitamins and minerals, and enzymes that play a vital role in hair growth. Key components such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin K act as antioxidants by helping stress on the scalp. Additionally, enzymes like proteolytic help in the breakdown of dead skin cells and make way for new hair growth.
One of the main characteristics of aloe vera is its natural moisturising properties, it can keep the scalp hydrated by preventing dryness, because dryness of the scalp may lead to hair breakage.
Aloe vera gel helps soothe an irritated or inflamed scalp, conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis can affect hair growth. However, using aloe vera gel will create a better environment and nourishment for the hair from the roots.
Proper blood circulation is important for hair growth, and aloe vera gel helps stimulate circulation to the scalp. Hence promoting stronger and healthier hair growth.
Although much effectiveness of aloe vera seems promising in terms of hair health, scientific research done specifically for the regrowth of hair is rather limited. Some studies indicate that aloe vera can favourably promote overall scalp health, but evidence linking application with hair regrowth is less. Moreover, other factors like genetics and medications should be considered for hair loss. Conditions such as alopecia, which causes severe hair loss, may not see much benefit from aloe vera.
While considering gel for hair growth, always prefer pure aloe vera gel because impure aloe vera gel may cause more harm than benefit. It often contains chemicals, fragrances and colours which can cause skin allergy, irritation, or lead to clogged pores. It does not provide the soothing, moisturising or healing effects that real aloe vera gels provide.

While elucidating its several uses, the dermatologist concluded that aloe vera might be helpful in keeping the scalp healthy which could improve general hair health, but depends on the individual's health condition. Before using aloe vera gel in daily routine, it is advised to consult a doctor for tailor-made suggestions and other treatment options as it provides insight about health conditions and thereby promotes healthy life.
