New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: According to scientists, a mini solar minimum is about to grip the Earth and the planet could face cold weather and harsh storm for next three decades- a mini ice age.

As per a report from indiatimes, experts believe that the Sun is likely to end a natural hibernation and it may lead to food shortages among others as temperature across the planet drop.

A solar minimum refers to a period in which the Sun releases less energy or heat than usual. As per NASA, the Sun will reach its lowest activity period in over two centuries in 2020.

As per an expert from Northumbria University, the temperature could drop up to degree celcius, in a cold spell lasting up to one year, it may not sound much but it's a significant drop.

"The Sun is approaching a hibernation period. Less sunspots will be formed on the solar surface and thus less energy and radiation will be emitted towards the planets and the Earth," indiatimes quoted professor Zharkova as saying. She has published multiple scientific papers on solar minimums.

Though the solar minimums are part of Sun's natural cycle every 11 years, 2020 will be specially chilly as it marks the beginning of Grand Solar Minimum(GSM). The event occurs every 400 years. The last GSM had occured from 1645 to 1715.

In a report, the Sun warned of icy spells and wet summers until solar minimum comes to an end in 2053.

Well, it's time to brace yourselves, hardcore winter is coming.
