THE SPECIAL event of ‘Earth Day’ is observed annually throughout the year on April 22 to raise awareness regarding the importance of climate change and ways to protect our planet. Also known as ‘International Mother Earth Day’, the day also focuses on the efforts to protect nature and the planet.
Several problems coexist such as overpopulation, soil erosion, depleting environment, deforestation, and water pollution among others. Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Here’s everything you need to know about this special occasion.
Earth Day 2023: History
World Earth Day was celebrated for the first time on 22nd April 1970, during the UNESCO conference in 1969 in San Francisco. The peace activist, John Mc Connell proposed to honour Mother Earth and the concept of peace. World Earth Day was earlier proposed to be held on 21st March 1970, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. But later, United States Senator, Gaylord Nelson proposed to hold nationwide environmental enlightenment on 22nd April 1970 and renamed it 'Earth Day'.
Earth Day 2023: Significance
Environment plays a major role in determining the health of the planet. World Earth Day is observed to acknowledge climate change and spread awareness around the world regarding the same. The day urges people to come together and talk about major environmental issues such as water and air pollution, deforestation, and many more.
Earth Day 2023: Theme
The theme for World Earth Day 2023 is ‘Invest In Our Planet.’ The theme for World Earth Day 2022 was also the same, ‘Invest in our planet’. This year will mark the 53rd celebration of Earth Day.

The celebrations of World Earth Day revolve around spreading awareness about environmental problems. The celebration of eco-consciousness takes place in more than 190 countries around the globe and is the most widely observed nonreligious holiday in history.
