What Is Dengue Fever?
Dengue is a mosquito-borne illness that is caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which has four distinct variants (DENV-1 to DENV-4). It is transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which typically bites during the day. The dengue virus is mostly found in tropical and subtropical regions, including Central and South America, Africa, parts of Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Dengue fever happens especially during and after the monsoon season, when stagnant water provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Although dengue is not contagious from person to person, except when passed from a pregnant woman to their child. The symptoms are initially mild. However, if a person catches the infection again with a different version of DENV, the risk of severe complications can increase. According to studies, around 400 million people get infected with dengue every year, but around 80 per cent have no symptoms.
