Acne can be a frustrating and persistent problem, causing emotional distress and scarring. Factors contributing to it may include hormonal fluctuations, genetics, stress, poor skincare routines and environmental influences. Acne is one of the most advanced skin conditions which is surrounded by numerous myths which lead to incorrect treatment procedures resulting in prolonged skin issues. Knowing the reality of what works will assist people in making the correct decisions pertaining to their skincare practices.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Ms Lalita Arya, VP, Product for Dermalogy Care debunked common myths about acne that you might believe to be true.

Acne Myths Debunked

Myth: Acne Is Only A Teen Problem

FACT: People tend to believe teenage years are the only time acne is a skin issue while the truth is acne is caused due to fluctuation of hormones at any age. Adult acne is quite common these days, often due to strains, hormone changes and some lifestyle choices.

Myth: Washing Your Face Often Will Always Prevent Acne

FACT: Skin may get too dry due to excessive washing resulting in oil production and possible acne. Mild cleansing of the face twice a day is the best solution as it removes more dirt without increasing skin irritation.

Myth: Excessive Sunlight Clears Acne

FACT: Even though sunlight may aid in reducing pimples, damage done to the skin may cause hyperpigmentation and skin along with premature ageing. Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen will protect the skin further.

Myth 4: Popping Pimples Makes Them Heal Faster

Fact: Popping a pimple increases the likelihood of bacteria getting trapped under the skin, worsening inflammation and scarring. Spot treatments with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are more useful in promoting healing.

Myth 5: Makeup Causes Acne

Fact: Makeup, especially non-comedogenic and oil-free products does not clog pores or cause breakouts. However, failing to remove makeup properly before going to bed contributes to acne.

Ways To Get Clear Skin
