Caring for a premature baby can be both emotionally and physically challenging. Preterm babies are fragile and require extra attention. If you are a new parent navigating the challenges of preterm birth, the tips below can help you provide the best care for your little one. Premature babies are those born before completing 9 months of pregnancy. Since they are born before their expected time, their bodies are more delicate and underdeveloped. Premature birth can result from various factors, including maternal age, smoking, excessive stress, carrying multiples (twins, triplets, or more), high blood pressure, infections, or diabetes.
Preterm babies often have underdeveloped organs, making basic functions like breathing, feeding, fighting infections, and regulating body temperature more challenging. They are also more prone to infections and illnesses, increasing the risk of health issues such as respiratory problems, jaundice, anemia, developmental delays, and gastrointestinal issues. This makes it crucial to provide them with the utmost care for their well-being. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Nitu Mundhra, Consultant Neonatologist and Lactation Expert at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Delhi, shared important tips on how to care for preterm babies:
Tips To Take Care Of Preterm Babies
Kangaroo Care
Parents are encouraged to practice kangaroo care, also known as skin-to-skin contact. This involves holding your baby close to your body, which helps regulate their body temperature, heart rate, and breathing patterns. Kangaroo care also fosters a strong emotional bond between the parents and the baby.

Create A Warm And Quiet Environment
Premature babies are highly sensitive to loud noises and temperature fluctuations. Ensure the room is warm but not too hot or cold. Close windows and doors to reduce noise and limit visitors to provide a calm and safe environment.
Feed Them Properly
Breast milk is essential for premature babies as it provides the necessary nutrients to boost their immunity and support growth and development. If you face challenges in breastfeeding, consider consulting a lactation expert for guidance.

Follow Hygiene Practices
Since premature babies have weak immune systems, they are more susceptible to infections. Prioritize hygiene by thoroughly washing your hands or using a sanitizer before handling the baby. Avoid allowing sick individuals near the baby and maintain a clean environment.
