Physical activity or exercise involves engaging in various activities to maintain fitness and overall health. As people age, they may experience a range of health issues such as arthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, cataracts, hearing loss, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), immune system decline, varicose veins, and gastrointestinal problems. Managing these conditions can be challenging and may significantly disrupt daily life.
For this reason, it becomes essential for elderly individuals to take proactive steps to prioritize their health. Staying active and healthy can help prevent the risk of various health problems while enhancing the quality of life. In a discussion with Jagran English, Dr. Imraan Khan (PT), Consultant Head Physiotherapist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Mumbai, highlighted the importance of physical exercise, especially for elderly people.
According to Dr. Khan, incorporating exercises or physical activities into daily routines can be highly beneficial. He recommends that older individuals dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to exercise, which can include activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, yoga, meditation, dancing, or swimming. Many elderly individuals rely on others for daily tasks, but regular exercise can improve flexibility, balance, and mobility, leading to greater physical independence.
Exercise also helps in strengthening muscles, making it easier to perform everyday activities. Over time, regular physical activity promotes better heart health by improving cardiovascular functions and maintaining optimal blood pressure levels. Additional benefits of regular exercise include enhanced sleep quality, increased energy levels, improved mental health, increased bone density (reducing the risk of osteoporosis), and better cognitive function.
Dr. Khan emphasized that while physical exercise is highly beneficial for elderly individuals, it is important not to overdo it, as excessive exercise can adversely affect health. He advises listening to your body and stopping immediately if needed. Before starting any workout regimen, consulting a doctor is recommended to ensure that the exercise plan is suitable.
Finally, Dr. Khan stressed the importance of a well-balanced diet alongside exercise. Meals should include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean protein to support overall health and well-being.
