For some expectant mothers, winter can be a challenging time during pregnancy. The cold weather increases susceptibility to infections, coughs, and colds, often causing discomfort and body aches. This article highlights common challenges faced during pregnancy in winter and provides tips to stay healthy.
Pregnancy is a transformative period for women, and winter can add an extra layer of discomfort, making it harder to stay healthy and hearty. Women diagnosed with hypertension or gestational diabetes must exercise extra caution, as these conditions require careful monitoring during pregnancy. Cold weather is also associated with increased joint pain and stiffness.
Respiratory problems are another common concern for pregnant women during winter. Those with pre-existing conditions like asthma or allergies may experience exacerbated symptoms, causing additional stress. Additionally, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), triggered by hormonal fluctuations, might also affect pregnant women. It is essential for expectant mothers to stay in regular contact with their doctors to ensure they follow the necessary precautions for navigating the colder months successfully. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Anuja Thomas, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital in Kharghar, Mumbai, shared insights into the most common challenges faced during pregnancy in winter and offered recommendations to overcome them.
Tips To Stay Healthy During Winter Pregnancy
Maintain A Well-Balanced Diet
Eating nutrient-rich foods is vital for both maternal health and the baby’s growth. Include dark leafy greens, fruits, and whole grains in your diet. Avoid junk, spicy, oily, canned, sugary, and processed foods.

Engage In Mindful Practices
Practices like prenatal yoga or meditation can help you stay calm and composed. Opt for indoor exercises as the harsh winter weather may not be conducive to outdoor activities. Incorporate deep breathing exercises into your daily routine.
Wear Winter-Appropriate Clothing
Protect yourself from the cold by wearing hats, gloves, socks, and a warm coat or jacket. Layering appropriately ensures you stay warm and comfortable.
Stay Hydrated
The dry winter air increases the body’s need for hydration. Drink at least 13-15 glasses of water daily to keep yourself and your baby healthy.
Get A Flu Vaccine
Flu, colds, and respiratory infections are prevalent in winter. Ensure you get a flu vaccine as recommended by your doctor to safeguard against such illnesses.
Maintain Personal Hygiene
Wash your hands thoroughly after using the restroom, before eating, or after touching contaminated surfaces. Practice good cough etiquette by using a tissue or handkerchief while sneezing or coughing. Regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, such as kitchen counters, faucets, and furniture, to minimize exposure to germs. Limit visitors at home to reduce the risk of infections.
Wear A Mask And Avoid Crowded Places
Protect yourself by wearing a mask in public and avoiding crowded spaces where the risk of infection is higher.
