It's important to keep an eye on your nutrition throughout Shravan, particularly if you're fasting, to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need to stay healthy. In the Hindu calendar, Shravan is a holy month that honors Lord Shiva. During this time, many followers fast and refrain from eating certain foods, especially those that aren't vegetarian, and occasionally even grains.
Fasting during this time is not only a religious ritual but also a means of cleansing the body and mind. To avoid any health problems, it is crucial to maintain a nutritious and well-balanced diet. Nuts, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables can all contribute vital vitamins and minerals to your diet. Sabudana, rajgira (amaranth), and singhara flour are some of the staple foods used to make wholesome, satisfying fasting foods. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Rohini Patil, an MBBS and nutritionist, discussed the diet plan for fasting during Shravan.

Shravan, a sacred month in the Hindu calendar, is a time of devotion, prayers, and fasting. For many, fasting is a spiritual practice, but it also presents an opportunity to detox the body by adopting healthier eating habits during the eating window. However, maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet during this period is crucial for sustaining energy levels and overall well-being.
Dr. Rohini Patil, a renowned nutritionist, emphasizes the importance of mindful eating during Shravan fasting. She suggests incorporating nutrient-dense foods such as almonds and seasonal fruits that provide sustained energy and essential nutrients. Following are her top recommendations:
Varai/Bhagar: Bhagar millet is known for its ability to cook quickly and has a mild, nutty flavor. Bhagar millet is gluten-free, rich in dietary fiber, and provides various essential nutrients, making it a healthy choice for individuals seeking diverse grain options. Because it cooks very quickly and with minimal effort, bhagar recipes are extremely popular among the people of Maharashtra and Gujarat throughout the year.
Almonds: Almonds are a nutritious snack perfect for fasting. Rich in protein, healthy fats, dietary fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E, they help keep you satiated and energized and support overall health. This year’s Dietary Guidelines for Indians, released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), endorse almonds as a valuable source of plant protein and a nutritious snack. Incorporating a handful of almonds into your diet can prevent hunger pangs and reduce the temptation to consume unhealthy foods, ensuring you stay nourished and satiated.
Keeping the body hydrated is achieved by consuming lots of water and other liquids, such as buttermilk and coconut water, particularly when fasting for extended periods. (Image Credit: Canva)
Seasonal Fruits: Fruits are an essential part of a fasting diet as they provide natural sugars, vitamins, and minerals. They are hydrating and help replenish electrolytes, which is especially important during fasting when water intake might be limited. Opt for fruits like bananas, apples, and melons, which are easy to digest and offer a quick energy boost.
Sweet Potato: Sweet potatoes are a healthy root vegetable chock full of antioxidants that protect your cells from damage. The nutrients in sweet potatoes are excellent for your gut, eyes, immune system, and more. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and zinc.
Rajgira (Amaranth): Rajgira, also known as amaranth, is a nutrient-dense grain that is rich in protein, iron, and calcium. It is gluten-free and easy to digest, making it a great addition to fasting diets. Rajgira can be used to make rotis, laddoos, or porridge, providing a wholesome and satisfying meal option. Its high fiber content also aids in digestion and helps maintain a feeling of fullness.
Dr. Rohini Patil concludes by saying that if you are fasting during Shravan and looking for food options to include during your eating period, these are some of her top recommendations. Adding these healthy and nutritious foods to your diet can be extremely beneficial for overall well-being and sustained energy during the fasting period.
