As temperatures rise, asthma symptoms such as coughing and wheezing often worsen due to heat, humidity, and pollution. An expert highlights how to manage this chronic condition during summer. Follow these tips without any further delay. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects millions of people, including both children and adults. Marked by inflamed and narrowed airways, asthma causes recurring episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and breathlessness. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Bobby Sadawarti, Consultant Pediatrician, Neonatologist, Allergist, and Lactation Consultant at AIMS Hospital in Dombivli, shared foolproof tips to control asthma during the summer season.
According to Dr. Bobby Sadawarti, this condition can worsen in summer due to high temperatures, increased air pollution, and exposure to allergens like pollen and dust. The hot, humid air can irritate the airways, making breathing more difficult for patients. Moreover, if left unmanaged, asthma can lead to sleep disturbances, reduced quality of life, and in severe cases, life-threatening attacks and frequent hospitalizations. Hence, it is crucial to manage this condition with expert guidance.
Crucial Tips To Manage Asthma During Summer
- Stay hydrated: It is important to drink plenty of water to keep your airways moist and reduce irritation caused by dry summer air.
- Avoid going out during peak pollution hours: Limit outdoor activities between late morning and early evening, when pollution and heat are at their worst. Check the air quality before going out. It is advisable to exercise at home or in the early morning when the weather is pleasant. Avoid exercising outdoors during the afternoon or evening.
- Keep indoor air clean: Use fans or air purifiers, keep windows closed on high-pollen days, and avoid using strong chemical cleaners that can irritate your lungs.
- Stick to your medication plan: Take inhalers as prescribed by your doctor. Always keep your inhaler with you.
- Recognize and avoid triggers: Be aware of smoke, dust, or sudden weather changes that can worsen asthma symptoms.
- Wear a mask without fail and avoid crowded places: Face masks help protect against allergens such as germs, pollen, dust, and pollution.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes, as they can also trigger asthma.
- Keep your home clean, dust-free, and mold-free, as these factors can worsen asthma.
Finally, Dr. Bobby Sadawarti emphasized:
“Don’t touch your face,” as allergens can travel into your eyes, nose, and mouth through your hands. Be mindful and wash your hands regularly. Taking these precautions can help you stay healthy during the summer season.
