Headache Type And Its Cause: In today’s fast-paced world, people are always in a rush and hustle. This can take a toll on their health, leading to the most common issue, which is a headache. While people are trying to manage tight deadlines, back-to-back meetings and never-ending struggles between work and personal life single-handedly, they often suffer from headaches. Headaches have become a common health complaint across the world. From migraine to sinus, not all headaches are the same. Whether you’re experiencing a dull, persistent ache of tension, intense migraine or facial pressure of sinus, each type of headache has different root causes.
Headaches are broadly classified into two types - primary and secondary. Headache Types And Their Root Causes
Migraine Headache
This is the most common type of headache experienced by people all across the world. They are intense, throbbing sensations that typically occur on one side of the head and last from four to 72 hours unless treated by medicines. Often they are triggers by hormonal changes, missed meals, less sleep, alcohol intake, smells, and sunlight. Migraine headache may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting and light and sound sensitivity.
Sinus Headache
This headache is commonly linked to sinus infections, allergies or colds and cause a deep, continuous pain or pressure in the forehead, cheeks and bridge of the nose.Sinus headache causes to nasal congestion, fever or post-nasal drip and may worsen with sudden head movement or strain.
Tension-Type Headache
This is another common form of headache that feels like a tight band wrapped around your forehead. This headache can be caused due to stress, poor posture, dehydration, alcohol or even skipping meals. Although not medically serious, frequent tension headaches could signal chronic stress or unhealthy lifestyle habits that need to be taken care of.
Cluster Headache
Commonly referred to as ‘suicidal headache’ due to its intensity, this rare type of headache causes excruciating pain, usually around one eye. Cluster headache as the name suggests occur in clusters or cycles and may be accompanied by redness, tearing or nasal congestion. It is often believed to be linked to abnormalities in the hypothalamus which is the brain region that regulates the biological clock in humans.

Hormone-Related Headache
This headache is caused by oestrogen levels, especially before menstruation and occurs during pregnancy or menopause. Hormonal changes impact brain neurotransmitters, leading to pain in susceptible individuals. For this type of headache, it is important to consult a healthcare expert who can help individuals manage the pain.
Thunderclap Headache
As the name suggests, this headache type strikes suddenly and reaches its peak intensity within 60 seconds. Described as the “worst headache of one’s life,” thunderclap headache can signal serious underlying issues like a ruptured blood vessel or meningitis. Immediate medical interventions is required as it can be life-threatning.
Cervicogenic Headache
This headache ooriginates from issues in the neck, such as injury, poor posture, or cervical spine degeneration. The pain can typically begins in the neck and extends to the head. This headache can be managed by physical therapy, chiropractic care and ergonomic corrections.
Medication Overuse Headache
Also known as rebound headache, this occurs when people consume painkillers too frequently. Overuse of medication can overstimulate the brain and worsen headaches over time. This cause needs to be reconsidered and requires proper management.
Treatment To Cure Headache
Although medicines prevent headaches, it is important to get enough sleep, eat a nutritious diet, limit screen time, practise relaxation techniques and stay hydrated. Besides, a hot bath or applying a heating pad around the head several times for 5-10 minutes can also provide relief from headaches.
