Halloween 2024: Observed every year on October 31, Halloween is a festival rich in history and cultural meaning that symbolises the transition from autumn to winter and the onset of the darker season. Halloween is set to be as enchanting as ever, captivating millions worldwide with its vibrant mix of costumes, traditions and festivities. Over the centuries, this festival evolved, incorporating various cultural influences, particularly from the Christian tradition surrounding All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day.
Halloween adopted whimsical and playful rituals characterised by activities like trick-or-treating, costume parties and pumpkin carving. Each of these traditions holds its own significance including the jack-o'-lantern.
Halloween 2024 History
The origins of Halloween can be traced back over 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain, predominantly celebrated in Ireland and Scotland. This festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a period when the Celts believed that the souls of the deceased could return to the earth. To honour these spirits, bonfires were lit and sacrifices were made. As Christianity spread, this ancient festival became intertwined with the observance of All Saints’ Day on November 1, leading to a blend of traditions celebrating both the living and the dead.
