Holi, the festival of colours, is one of the most vibrant festivals of India. It brings joy, laughter and happiness with people coming together in a spirited embrace. Holi 2025 will be observed on March 14 with great pomp and enthusiasm. People celebrate the day by playing with gulal, colours, water and balloons. While splashing colours on each other is fun, it takes a toll on your hair, leaving it dry and damaged. With some pre-Holi tips, you can easily take care of your hair and enjoy playing with colours at the same time.
“Bura na mano, Holi hai!” (Don't mind, it's Holi!) - This is what you’ll hear after your friend smears colours on your face, and that’s the fun about this festival. Although we forget about our hair amidst the celebration, the harsh chemicals present in the vibrant powders can cause harm to it. Just as much excited you’re in celebrating Holi this year, it is important to keep your tresses healthy and lustrous. Here’s a list of five pre-Holi tips to prepare your hair to celebrate Holi without any fear.
Pre-Holi Tips To Take Care Of Your Hair
Oil Your Hair
This is the first step to shield the hair from the harsh chemicals present in Holi colours. Apply a generous amount of oil to your hair before stepping out to celebrate the festival. Coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil can help create a protective layer, preventing colours from entering deep into the hair shaft. Massage the scalp and the hair strands well so that they get evenly coated.
Protective Hairstyle
Do not keep the hair loose as it can get tangled and colour-damaged. Secure the hair in a protective style like a tight braid, bun or ponytail to minimise exposure to colours and gulal. This reduces the chances of breakage and colours seeping into the scalp, thus making post-Holi hair cleanup easier.
Use Serum
Apply hair serum with SPF before going out. This provides extra protection against the drying effects of synthetic colours. It also keeps the hair hydrated and makes it easier to wash off the colours later.

Cover Hair With Scarf Or Cap
Although this is optional, you can definitely try wearing a scarf, bandana or a cap to protect your hair tresses. This acts as a physical barrier against the colour powders and liquid dyes, reducing direct contact with the hair. Besides, it also adds a stylish touch to your Holi outfit.
Avoid Shampooing Right Before Holi
Never shampoo your hair just before the celebration as it can wash off the natural oils present in the scalp. This makes the scalp vulnerable to damage. Allow your natural hair oils to act as a protective shield, and it is advisable to cleanse your hair a day or two before Holi.
