HMPV Virus In India: The HMPV outbreak in China has left everyone in fear of another pandemic. The Indian Council of Medical Research (IMR) has detected two cases of HMPV in Karnataka. Both cases were identified through routine surveillance for multiple respiratory viral pathogens, as part of ICMR’s ongoing efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses across the country.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a type of respiratory virus, first identified in 2001. Recently, it has gained attention due to a surge in cases in China. A mild respiratory virus, HMPV has been infecting people for many years. It is part of the same family as other common respiratory viruses and typically presents with flu-like symptoms affecting the upper respiratory tract. Dr Manoj Goel, Director & Unit Head, Pulmonology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram explains common symptoms and ways to protect yourself from this virus.

Symptoms of HMPV
- Runny nose
- Cough
- Nasal congestion
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
In rare cases, HMPV can lead to serious infections like pneumonia, especially in young children, the elderly, or individuals with compromised immune systems. Those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, kidney problems, heart disease, or pre-existing lung conditions like COPD, asthma, or bronchitis may also be at higher risk of severe symptoms.
Preventive Measures For HMPV
Maintain Good Hygiene: Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitisers when soap and water are not available.
Avoid Close Contact: Keep a safe distance from people who are showing symptoms of respiratory illness, such as coughing or sneezing.
Wear a Mask: In crowded or poorly ventilated areas, wearing a mask can help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses.
Boost Your Immunity: Maintain a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and get regular exercise to strengthen your immune system.
Manage Chronic Conditions: If you have underlying health issues, continue your prescribed medications and follow your doctor’s advice to keep your condition under control.
Treatment and Recovery: HMPV is a self-limiting virus, which means that it usually resolves on its own within a few days. There is generally no need for antibiotics or other medications unless advised by a healthcare professional. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications for symptom relief can help manage the condition. By following the recommended preventive measures and staying informed, you can protect yourself and others from HMPV infection.
