Holi, the festival of colours, is all about playing with colours, gulal, water and balloons. Holi 2025 falls on Saturday, March 14. When talking about defining Holi, the festival revolves around loud music, thandai and white clothes stained in multi-coloured gulal. Although the festival is known for its colourful splashes and lively atmosphere, what has taken a toll on the skin and hair is the synthetic colours. People often buy gulal and synthetic colours available in the market. In most cases, the colours available in the commercialised market are made of harsh chemicals that can cause harm to your skin as well as hair. The use of such colours has proved to be harsh on skin, resulting in rashes, cuts, allergies and others.

The chemical-laden synthetic colours have caused serious skin and hair problems. These colours do not wash off easily, and at least three to four baths are required to remove it completely. This results in peeling the skin and leaving it dry. Besides, the colours cause hair to become dry, leading to breakage. One of the easiest solutions to get rid of all these problems arising out of synthetic colours is to ditch them and opt for homemade natural and organic colours. Here’s how you can make natural colours at home to celebrate Holi.

How To Make Homemade Natural Holi Colours

Yellow - Marigold

Marigold flowers are a perfect choice for creating a bright yellow holi colour. You can make the yellow colour by simply boiling fresh marigold petals in water along with a pinch of turmeric powder. After the colour has fully infused, allow it to cool. Your natural yellow Holi colour is ready to use for a safe Holi celebration.

Pink - Roses

To enjoy a soft pink gulal, rose petals give the perfect hue. To make this, boil fresh rose petals in water until the liquid turns a rosy shade. Add some arrowroot powder to the mixture and allow it to dry completely. This will give you a silky, chemical-free pink Holi colour, which is a perfect alternative to synthetic gulal.

Red - Hibiscus And Rhododendron

Red is the favourite colour during the Holi celebration. Make this by grinding hibiscus and rhododendron flowers into a fine powder. This can be directly used as dry gulal. If you want a liquid colour, mix the powder with water. This will provide you with a natural and chemical-free red colour that won’t cause any skin irritation or allergies.

Saffron - Palash

Palash flowers, also known as the ‘Flame of the Forest,’ have been used to make saffron-coloured Holi water since ancient times. You can make the vibrant saffron Holi colour by soaking 100 grams of dried Palash flowers in a bucket of water overnight. In the morning, boil the mixture, strain it and allow it to cool. The rich, natural saffron Holi colour is ready to be used.

Blue - Aparajita

You can make the stunning, bold blue shade by using Aparajita (Butterfly Pea) flowers. Dry them in the sun for three to four days and grind them to a fine powder. Mix the powder with water to get a deep blue colour that not only provides a visual treat but is also completely safe for the skin.
