Air Pollution And Lung Cancer: Research has demonstrated a clear connection between exposure to polluted air and the development of lung cancer, particularly in urban areas where pollution levels are higher. Pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds, including many carcinogens, are prevalent in urban environments. When inhaled, these harmful substances can cause chronic inflammation and damage to lung tissue, which over time can lead to DNA mutations, causing cancer.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Prashant Saxena, Senior Director & Unit Head Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram explained how air pollution contributes to the rise of lung cancer.
How Air Pollution Can Cause Lung Cancer?
According to Dr Saxena, particulate matter, especially the fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, poses a substantial risk. These particles can enter the bloodstream, leading to systemic inflammation that further increases cancer risk. Moreover, air pollution is often laden with known carcinogens like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals, which are released from vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and other sources.
Numerous studies have shown a strong relationship between high levels of air pollution and increased lung cancer rates. Notably, this trend is especially concerning among non-smokers, emphasising the significance of environmental factors in cancer development.
Thus, measures to reduce air pollution are the need of the hour. Public awareness and engagement in health initiatives can lead to better outcomes, alongside advocating for policies aimed at improving air quality. Taking action now can help mitigate this pressing health threat for current and future generations.
