Side-Effects Of Pollution: When pollution levels rise, our health is at greater risk, as airborne pollutants can impact various body systems, particularly the respiratory, cardiovascular and immune systems. To monitor and maintain health in polluted environments, several medical tests can help detect early signs of pollution-related health issues.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Meenakshi Mohan, Consultant Pathologist-Neuberg Pulse Diagnostics, Kolkata listed some important tests that one should consider to detect the dangerous side-effects of air pollution.
Tests To Detect Side Effects Of Air Pollution
Lung Function Test (Spirometry): This test measures how well the lungs are working by assessing the amount of air a person can inhale and exhale and how quickly. Individuals exposed to high pollution levels often experience respiratory issues such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and reduced lung capacity, making this test valuable.
Complete Blood Count (CBC): Pollution exposure, especially particulate matter and heavy metals can lead to inflammatory responses in the body. A CBC test helps detect inflammation and infection by measuring red and white blood cells and platelet counts. Elevated white blood cell levels could indicate an immune response to pollutants.
Chest X-ray: Long-term exposure to air pollutants, especially fine particulate matter can cause changes in lung tissues. A chest X-ray can reveal signs of respiratory problems, including lung scarring or fluid buildup.

Allergy Tests: Pollutants can exacerbate allergies and asthma. An allergy test can identify specific allergens or irritants causing respiratory or skin reactions, guiding preventive measures in polluted environments.
Liver and Kidney Function Tests: Prolonged exposure to heavy metals, chemicals or toxins in the environment can affect the liver and kidneys. These tests evaluate enzyme levels to detect any potential damage or strain caused by pollutants.
These tests can provide crucial insights into how pollution is affecting one's health, enabling timely intervention and preventive steps. Regular monitoring can make a significant difference, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions or those living in high-pollution areas.
