Exfoliation is an effective skincare treatment that helps in rejuvenating and hydrating the skin. It is one of the important skincare steps that involves removing dead skin cells from the outer layers of the skin. It is also an effective therapy that helps get rid of dull and dry skin, increase blood circulation and improve the skin’s overall appearance. One should have exfoliation routines according to their skin type as every skin caters to different needs and skincare routines.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Ajay Rana, Dermatologist, Surgeon & Aesthetic Physician and the Founder and Director of ILAMED & Dermalyn Aesthetics explained how many times one should exfoliate their skin within a week at home.
According to Dr Rana, certain factors such as the kind of skin, its sensitivity, and the exfoliating agent determine the frequency with which you should do that. Some points to remember are:
Normal to Oily Skin
For people whose skin falls into this category (that is normal to oily), 2-3 times a week is usually enough. This way excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells are removed from your face, and pores are cleared so there are no more breakouts.

Combination Skin
The combination of an oily T-zone and dried-out cheeks means that you can do it 1-2 times weekly. Do not forget to soften harshness in less greasy places.
Dry or Sensitive Skin
It’s better to minimise its exfoliating dose if one has dry or sensitive skin i.e. once a week or sometimes even less if such period suits your facial characteristics well. It is dangerous since excessive removal of too many natural oils can only aggravate a situation where dryness exists and when one becomes very sensitive.
Chemical vs. Physical Exfoliation
The type of exfoliating product you use can impact how often you should use it. Chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are generally gentler and can be used more frequently compared to physical exfoliants like scrubs, which can be harsher and may require less frequent use.
Pay Attention to Your Skin's Response
It's important to monitor how your skin reacts to exfoliation. If you notice signs of irritation, redness, or excessive dryness, you may be exfoliating too often or using a product that's too harsh. In such cases, reduce the frequency or try a milder exfoliating product.
