Oregano is an essential herb common to cuisines worldwide that gives incredible amounts of flavour and aroma to savoury dishes. The deep aroma and flavour of oregano make Italian, Mediterranean and Mexican dishes sing, yet if you have access to oregano plants and don't need to buy them, you can save money. If you learn how to grow oregano, it is easy to do. Oregano is one of the simplest herbs to grow and requires little to no care.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or a novice gardener, growing oregano is easy, whether in a garden area, a balcony or even inside. Oregano grows well indoors and can be harvested year-round. Here is a simple guide that you can follow to grow an oregano plant in a pot for your balcony garden.
Step-By-Step Guide To Grow Oregano
Choose The Right Type
Take your needs into consideration when selecting your oregano. For cooking purposes, Greek and Italian oregano are excellent options. Select a variety that meets your needs and enjoy the benefits.
Choose Right Pot And Soil
Oregano is a flexible herb that grows well in pots, containers and garden beds. It is best to choose a pot with drainage holes for successful growth to avoid too much water in the rooting zone. The best type of soil is a mixture of potting soil, garden soil, sand or compost as oregano dislikes heavy, wet soil which can limit its growth.

Plant The Seeds Or Cuttings
With oregano seeds, just sprinkle them over the soil surface and cover them with a light dusting of soil. If you are propagating oregano using cuttings, remove any lower leaves and then place the cutting either in water or in the soil, securing it well and watch for roots and new leaves to pop up in just a few weeks.

Good Amount Of Sunlight
Oregano does best in warm and sunny situations. Make sure to position your plant to receive at least 6 hours of direct daily sunlight. If you have oregano growing indoors, consider placing it in front of a sunny window or under a grow light to receive maximum growth.
Water The Plant
Oregano doesn't need much water. Only water it when the soil is dry. Too much water may result in root rot. The soil is best kept dry so that the plant grows healthily and doesn't develop waterlogged roots.

Pruning And Harvesting
When your oregano plant has grown to about 6 inches tall, be sure to prune it often to stimulate new growth. Be sure to trim any leaves and stems to keep the plant healthy and bushy. For the best flavour, be sure to harvest fresh, green leaves.
Store Fresh Oregano
You can either use fresh oregano leaves if you desire or you can dry them to store for later use. Simply tie up small bunches of fresh oregano and hang them in a dry, airy place to dry. Once dried, you can place the leaves in an airtight container to keep their flavour.
