Silk sarees embody traditional craftsmanship and value but tend to be delicate; they require sustainable care. Environmental conditions greatly impact the durability and material quality of silk, therefore, how you store and care for your silk sarees will depend on the climate you are in. For instance, your silk sarees may succumb to moisture damage and mould in a humid coastal environment. Thus, recognising and understanding the climate and maintaining your silk sarees right to suit the complexities of the weather is the single most important thing to preserve not only the fabric but the memories associated with it. Here, we've curated a simple guide that you can follow to keep your silk drape fresh and durable in every climate.
Silk Saree Care Tips For Every Climate
Humid Or Hot Climate
1. Store your sarees in natural fibre bags like muslin or cotton to allow for airflow and ventilation. Avoid plastic bags as these can trap humidity and moisture against naturally breathable fabric and possibly destroy or damage some elements of the fabric.
2. you have finished wearing your saree, hang it for a few hours in a shaded area, allowing it to breathe and for any moisture to evaporate. Avoid prolonged exposure in direct sunlight as that will make the colours fade even after washing.
3. Consider placing natural desiccants in your storage bag. Neem leaves, cloves and/or lavender are examples of organic herbs that will absorb moisture and repel pests.

Dry Or Cold Climate
1. Using a steam iron on a low setting, carefully remove wrinkles, making sure not to scorch the delicate silk fibres or leave water spots.
2. Do not over-dry your silk saree by putting it in the dryer; this will make the fibres brittle and weak. Instead, remove excess moisture and allow the saree to air dry.

Monsoon
1. Simply dry it out immediately if you wear your silk saree in the rain so that no moisture collects in the silk fabric.
2. In the rainy season, fold it carefully and avoid putting any grease marks on it as moisture can collect in the folds and cause the silk thread to deteriorate and build mould with a musty smell.
3. Store your silk sarees in your wardrobe with silica gel packets to help absorb extra moisture and to keep them in a dry area.
