Kidney cancer is a growing yet often overlooked health concern in India and renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer. Although kidney cancer accounts for just about 3 per cent of all adult cancers in India, with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) constituting 85 per cent of all kidney tumours. In India, the reported annual incidence of RCC is 2 per 100,000 males and 1 per 100,000 females, which is lower than that reported in Western countries, but it is increasing in India as a result of lifestyle and risk factor exposure changes. A higher proportion of Indian patients are younger at diagnosis, with almost one-third under the age of 50 at diagnosis, and with many cases diagnosed as advanced stages.

It is important to recognise and acknowledge the practical and natural strategies that reduce the risk of kidney cancer. From quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight to controlling blood pressure and avoiding the overuse of painkillers, there are several evidence-backed tips that are simple, accessible and life-saving. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Abhigna Panda, Consultant - Urology, Manipal Hospital Varthur, shares effective tips that help lower the cancer risk naturally but also support overall kidney health and longevity.

Ways To Prevent Kidney Cancer Naturally

Stop Smoking

It is well known that smoking increases the risk of kidney cancer. In India, the risk of RCC is nearly twice as high for current smokers compared to non-smokers. Dr. Abhigna Panda states, “ Quitting smoking can reduce risk over time, hence, tobacco cessation is a primary step in cancer prevention.”

Maintain A Healthy Weight

Obesity is closely associated with kidney cancer risk, compared to subjects at a normal weight, there is an approximate 77% increased risk in obese patients.

Control Blood Pressure

Kidney cancer has a notable risk factor in hypertension (high blood pressure). Managing your blood pressure with diet, exercise, and medication as prescribed by your doctor can help your risk.

Limit Exposure To Harmful Chemicals

Some chemicals, such as trichloroethylene (used in degreasing and cleaning metal parts) can increase the risk of kidney cancer by 30–40 per cent. It is likely that exposure would mainly be environmental or at work. Following proper protocols, using protective equipment, and limiting contact with hazardous materials can minimise unnecessary exposure.

Kidney Healthy Diet

Many fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help support kidney health and lower your cancer risk. A diet that limits red and processed meats, restricts salt, and avoids excessive fats is recommended.

Hydrate

Getting a good amount of water will ensure that your kidneys can easily flush your body of toxins and work as well as possible. Aim for 1.5 to 2liters of water a day. You can always adjust for activity level or how hot or dry it is. Water is a better option than coffee, sugary drinks or soft drinks, especially for your kidneys!

Engage In Physical Activity

Staying physically active on a regular basis assists in weight management, blood pressure regulation, and overall kidney health. Dr. Abhigna Panda says, “Aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, like brisk walking, swimming, or biking.”

Avoid Self-Medication And Painkiller Abuse

Steer clear of using painkillers too frequently. Using non-prescription pain relievers, particularly NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and combiflam, on a regular basis can harm the kidneys and elevate cancer risk. Only use these medications as instructed, and if you require long-term pain management, talk to your doctor about safer alternatives.

Regular Health Check-Ups

In the presence of risk factors like a family history of kidney cancer, hypertension, or obesity, routine screenings and check-ups can aid in the early detection of issues and enhance outcomes.

The incidence of cancer cases in India is anticipated to rise from 1.46 million in 2022 to 1.57 million by 2025, with kidney cancer now ranking as the 16th most prevalent type.
Although not all risk factors for kidney cancer can be avoided, adopting healthy lifestyle choices can greatly reduce your risk and enhance overall kidney health. To help keep your kidneys—and your life—healthy, you can quit smoking, maintain a healthy weight, control your blood pressure, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, limit exposure to chemicals, stay active, use medications wisely, and get regular check-ups.
